What Causes Low Grade Fever, Throat Pain, Weakness, Body Aches And Tiredness?

Question: My 16 year old son has been having these symtoms for about a month and a half now. Runs a low grade fever at night 99.6, 99.8, body weakness, pain, tired, sometimes he will say his throat hurts. He is 16. Hypothyroid runs in our family (I have it as well as my daughter). Here is the kicker, he is deathly afraid to have blood work done. When I took him to the Dr. a few weeks ago, we saw the PA, and she ordered blood work. I took him to the lab and he freaked out as soon as she tied the band around his arm. What could it be?

Brief Answer:
Un upper respiratory tract infection is a possible cause.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
I have gone through your question.
I can understand your concern.

1.Weakness and tiredness can be a symptoms of hypothyroidism.
Low grade fever, pain and sore throat(and tiredness) can be attributed to a upper respiratory tract infection.

Anyway i agree with his doctor. For the right diagnose there are necessary to do some bood tests.
If i was his doctor ,i will order to do the thyroid function tests(TSH, freeT3 and freeT4)and a hemogram(CBC).

2. Dehydration can explain his tiredness and weakness, but not the pain and the sore throat.
If he has diarrhea as side effect of Miralax,it is possible that he is dehydrated. You should be careful with this drug.

Let me know his result,so we can deduct the cause of his actual condition.

Hopethis information is helpful.
Best regards.

What do I do about his anxiety of having blood work done. He says it is too painful. The lab or the doctor won't force him to have the bloodwork done. I have offered rewards money, item he wants, he doesnt care. Wont do it. the doctor won't prescribe a one time anxiety med just so we could get it done.

What would be a better alternative to the miralax

Brief Answer:
The patient decide.No-one can force him.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again

I can understand that no the doctor won't force your son to have the bloodwork done.Me either,if i was his doctor ,i could not force him to do the test if he doesn't want.

In these cases i talk with my patient and i explain very carefully the procedure because it is not very painful and every patient can tolerate the pain of blood withdrawal for the necessary tests.

In very specific cases, when the patient do not collaborate even after the psychotherapy and the blood test are very important for him the doctor can give him an anxiolytic for this problem.

In these case i prescribe oral melatonin premedication to reduce anxiety and pain in "little" patients having blood samples taken.

2.All the laxatives can give dehydration like side effect. My advice for you is to use regularly pure olive oil and kiwi like home remedies for his constipation issues.

Hope i have clarified your doubts.
If you have other questions, feel free to ask.I will be happy to help.
Wish you good health.

I was thinking a probiotic might help with his contispation issue rather than give him miralax

He takes melotonin at night to help fall asleep. He has ADD inattentive type. Which probably also explains the anxiety. It magnifies in ADD kids where we can talk ourselves into getting the procedure done. Like me and MRI's and being very claustrophobic. I get through it, it's not without tears and heavy breathing thoughout, but I get throught it. For my son, he can't find a way to talk himself through it.

Brief Answer:
Yes,The probiotics may help ease his constipation.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
I appologise for the late reply.

1.Probiotics can help restore the natural balance of bacteria in his digesteve system and may help for his constipation issues.
Some studies has demostated that the probiotics that contained Bifidobacterium appeared to be the most effective for contipation because it can increased the number of bowel movements and helped soften stools, making them easier to pass.

Anyway i can to say that there’s still not enough evidence to recommend a specific probiotic to people with constipation.

2.Inattentive ADHD also called attention deficit disorder makes kids appear to be in constant motion.Children who have it have a lot of difficulty paying attention.
Now i understand the problem with your son.

In these cases it is necessary a combination of medicine and therapy for better results.

His doctor may prescribe medication to improve his ability to concentrate.
Did you talk with a psychologist and a psychiatrist?
They can help, prescribe medication, and provide your child with counseling or therapy. It's best to seek out a psychiatrist who has experience treating children.

Behavior therapy also teaches you some parenting tactics, such as:
-Set up a system of rewards for good behavior.
-Withhold privileges or take away rewards to deal with unwanted behavior.

When a child has the treatment, tools, and support he needs, he’ll be able to focus and accomplish his goals.

Hope this is helpful.
Wish you all the best.
