Question: I HAVE CHRONIC ptsd and have been seeing therapists, psychiatrist, been put on so nuch meds I could no longer speak. I am having problems with memory, cognitive thinking, decision making . I isolate and I no longer think therapy and drugs have helped me. I am having problems with my eyes, had gallbladder removed and have fibromyalgia. I had a closed head injury in 2000. I would like to know if I see a neurologist they could test to see what is going on in my brain from the ptsd?

Brief Answer: Do consult a neurologist. Detailed Answer: Hello, Thanks for trusting us with your health concern. The problems that you have with the memory and cognitive thinking can be related to a pathology in the brain. It can be due to PTSD also. Another cause is depression and anxiety. These can cause a kind of “brain fog” that makes it difficult to concentrate and pay attention to things. As a result, it is harder for depressed or anxious people to store information in short term memory. You can do meditation, yoga and deep breathing exercises to decrease the problem. Other possible reason is Alzheimer’s disease and senile dementia which is common among XXXXXXX citizens. Other causes include head trauma, brain injury and brain tumors, alcohol and drug abuse which can damage or destroy brain cells, affecting a person’s ability to remember things. Please visit a neurophysician /neurologist to undergo physical check up and also to undergo relevant investigations required in your case for proper diagnosis. Meanwhile try to keep your mind busy with reading, crosswords, search a word and by playing Scrabble. Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have. Wishing you good health. Regards. Dr. Rakhi Tayal.
