What Causes Low Weight Of One Of The Twins Having Breast Milk?

default
Posted on Thu, 31 Jul 2014
Question: Hello Dr.

We are blessed with TWIN baby boys on 1st july.
Yesterday we checked weight and
1st Baby weight is : 1.890 KG and on 5th july it was 1.740 KG == 150 gm gain in 4 days
2nd Baby weight is : 2.050 KG and on 5th July it was 1.990 KG == 60 gm gain in 4 days

1st baby is having PRENAN dose more than Mothers milk
and 2nd baby is having mothers milk more than PRENAN dose.

Dr. has advised PRENAN dose beacuse our babies are premature. [delivery was happned after 34 wks + 1 day]

Can you suggest why 2nd baby is having less weight gain as compared to 1st baby?
And what is the remedy to balance this weight gain for both babies?

Thanks,
XXXXXX

Brief Answer:
There is no cause for concern

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to Healthcare-Magic
Greetings of the day

Dear Sir

Let me take this opportunity to congratulate you for being a father.

Let me reassure you there is no cause for concern.
Even twins have variable growth. Growth of two individual can't be exactly identitical not even in identitical twins. As they are preterm they will have catch up growth .
Babies usually lose 10 % of body weight in first ten days of life and after which there is catch up growth

U would suggest you the following

1. Let the feeding be on demand . Feed when they are hungry.
2. They should sleep for 1 to 2 hours after every feed. It implies feeds are adequate
3. Urine output should be adequate : 6 to 7 times a day or 2 to 3 pamper changes
4. Simyl MCt drops 5 drops twice a day will be helpful

Do get back to me if you need any further assistance, will be glad to assist you.

Take care
