What Causes Lower Abdominal Pain After Placing Mesh During Hernia Surgery?
Question: Is All of the mesh that was used in surgery for hernia surgery and bladder prolapse surgery (tot sling, monarch mesh, Y-mesh graph, for ex.) from a 2008 -2009 surgery "bad mesh" ?
And if it is causing pain, should it be removed?
Is it true that the mesh could be eroding and/or degrading?
Thank you

Brief Answer:
Mesh will not degrade
Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome to healthcare magic.I understand your concern.
In my opinion there are two types of mesh:-
1)Absorbable mesh-It is made up of animal protein and gets absorbed over a course of time.
2)Non absorbable mesh-It is synthetic mesh and it is a permanent implant. It has sideeffects like pain, infection, recurrence, adhesion formation and sometimes fluid can build up around the mesh.So depending on these symptoms and signs surgeons decide whether to remove it or not.
But mesh will not erode or degrade.
Hope this satisfies your query.
Feel free to discuss further.

Polypropylene is the mesh material used in my surgery.
I have pain and inflammation.
I don't want to use injections (steroids) and I do not want to try pelvic floor massage due to extreme pain.
But I am so afraid of the surgery: the recovery time of 12 weeks, the possibility of further complications, and the need for more surgery to repair damage.
And what happens to my bladder (which prolapsed after my last child in 1991) when the sling is removed?
And why am I having so much more incontinence now?
Thank you,

Brief Answer:
polypropylene is permanent non absorbent material.
Detailed Answer:
Hi there
good day
The material used in your mesh is a permanent non absorbent material.
The body generates an intense inflammatory response to the prosthetic that results in scar plate formation, increased stiffness of the abdominal wall.
All this kind of materials have reduced bio-compatibility with passage of time.
so they tens to loose tensile strength and may lead to increased symptoms.
Usually they will do alternate repair before removing sling and with that your symptoms will reduce.
If a similar case come to me i would suggest them to go for surgery, with modern techniques now the recover time is very less.
increased incontinence might be due to loss of tension in sling, this is common in many patients after 10-15 yrs after surgery.
i suggest you to consider speaking with your surgeon about surgery.
Hope i am able to answer your query.
