default
Posted on Thu, 3 Sep 2015
Question: My father in law got urine infection around a month ago, was hospitalised for 11 days. Doctors have said infections have gone down, and he is under continuous medication.
He was in urine catherisation last week, later it was removed.
Whereas again he felt pain in lower abdomen and he said urine is not getting passed, so doctor again has pur urine catheter.
We are worried that whether Doctors are following right way in treating him. Attached the discharge summary, latest blood/urine report and scanning report.
He doesn't sleep properly at night, but preferes to sleep during day.
He is a diabetic, BP and paralysis stroke patient.
Request your advice. Day by day, we are loosing control over expense which we can't bear without much improvements in his health. He is popping with new issues daily.

Brief Answer:
Remove catheter after starting treatment for prostate gland block.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX and welcome to HCM.
As an Urologist, i fully understand your concern.Treatment given is proper.
He has improved considerably, from the condition in which he was admitted in hospital. He does have an enlarged prostate due to which, he can't empty his bladder fully. He'll need a catheter, if difficulty increases, as he's not fit for prostate surgery. Medical treatment for the same can be started, but not done.
He needed a dialysis, as his kidney function was weak, on admission in hospital.
Diabetes affects the kidneys, if it's not well controlled. His blood sugar control is also not optimal. Never allow him to miss the medicines as advised, for diabetes, hypertension and cardiac condition.
If catheter is removed, he may again have incomplete emptying of urine.
He has not been prescribed medicine for prostate gland enlargement, which he should start, so that, he can remove the catheter after a week, and see if he can pass urine. Alfuzosin with Dutasteride, combination can be given.
Wishing him good health.

Brief Answer:
Preventive measures for dialysis, listed.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again.
Dialysis was done in the hospital, as per hospital records.
He also had an angiogram in the past.
Further need for dialysis, will depend on his kidney function and assessment on check-up.
Your question suggests, you weren't aware of the dialysis. is it true.??
Always discuss general condition with treating doctors.
He was seen by Physician, Cardiologist, Nephrologist, and a Psychiatrist.
Preventive measures for kidney protection include, avoiding table salt, restricting fresh fruits and coconut water, red meats in diet, eggs(except egg-white), and oily , and fried foods.
Wishing him good health.
