What Causes Lower Back Pain, Nausea And Breathing Difficulties?

Question: My mother almost 85 has had multiple surgeries and falls throughout her life. Seven years ago fell down cement icy steps, cracked head open & hit mid back hard. Never the same since. Also had right colon removed, and a houseflap surgery. She gets spells where her insides feel like they are moving non stop, then she gets a sharp pain in her lower back & rectum & instantly has trouble breathing. So many Drs. no answers. All they do is give her muscle relaxants, anit-anxiety meds & send her home. Vitals are always good. Had heart checked - good. Chest xray nothing seen. MRI revealing damaged S1/L5. Injections for that. When breathing thing happens, also gets really weak, nauseous, feels like she's floating away, very fatigued. Also has trouble eliminating when this all happens & feels as though she will pass out on the toilet.
She also has Celiac Disease, & has had not only right colon removal, 6” of intestine removed from a twist in intestine & also a House Flap done. I think I requested the wrong kind of Dr.

Brief Answer:
MRI of the brain is necessary.
Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for using HCM.
I have read your question and understand your concerns.
Besides the problems with internal organs and pain in the lower back, nausea and breathing issues are a modality controlled by the brain.
So, in my opinion, a brain MRI is necessary to evaluate stroke, post-traumatic brain injury, etc.
Damage at L5-S1 is not related to nausea and breathing problems.
Please get a brain MRI done and get back to me about further evaluation.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
Take care.

Interesting! A brand new ARNP to our community suggested this a few months ago and the other Drs. thought she was out of line. How would the brain be involved with the rectal issues, all the surgeries and the breathing?
Brief Answer:
Read below.
Detailed Answer:
Welcome back.
Ministrokes, for example, in the certain brain areas may cause breathing issues, dizziness, etc.
If the brain function is compromised, bowel movement issues also may arise from a partial paralysis.
Previous surgeries also play an important role in the rectal issues.
I think, getting a brain MRI is necessary even to exclude any brain conditions that may contribute in your mother's symptoms.
Hope I helped you.
Greetings.
