What Causes Lump In Armpit, Body Pain And Dizziness?

default
Posted on Mon, 17 Nov 2014
Question: I have a tender lump in my left armpit which I discovered around noontime yesterday and continuing body aches. I nearly fainted yesterday, but that hasn't happened since. I am on vacation in Hawaii. Any idea what this could be? My email address is YYYY@YYYY . Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Could be a lymph node swelling

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX.
Thank you for the question. If the swelling has come recently it could probably be a Lymph node swelling. They are the commonest swellings in that area. You can take analgesic medicines if there is severe pain. If there is redness or fever then you should see a Doctor and start antibiotics as it could be an infection or Folliculitis.
You should consult your Doctor and get a breast examination done to rule out any lump or swelling. You can also examine yourself and know but still go ahead with the examination by Clinician who might also ask for a Mammogram.
Do let me know the outcome of the examination.
Take care and let me know if I can help you with any further queries on the subject.

Thank you. It doesn't seem to be folliculitis. The lump is pea sized - below the skin - and the area around it is red, warm, sore, and about a quarter of the armpit is quite inflamed. I don't know if I have a fever because we don't have a thermometer (on vacation), but the ongoing body aches indicate perhaps that is so. Most likely an infection. I'll look for a clinic tomorrow. Thank you again Dr. XXXXXXX XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Then start an an Antibiotic

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX Thanks for the inputs.
Then it is most likely an infection of the subcutaneous tissues.
Please start an antibiotic in consultation with your Doctor. I usually advice my patients Amoxycillin + Clavulanic acid 625mg thrice daily for 5 days along with an Anti-inflammatory like Paracetamol plus Ibuprofen. This will usually resolve the problem. But a consultation with your Doctor would be required who can examine and confirm the problem. Take care,
Dr Rishi, XXXXXXX
