What Causes Lump In Neck Along With Fever And Exhaustion?
Question: I got a neck ultrasound today for a lump i've been feeling that has been slowly getting bigger for over a year. The dr said it was just a lymph node, but was normal looking, just a bit long (2.4cm), but it wasnt round so its ok. I also had a small palpable lymph node in the supraclavicular fossa (right side) that looks normal as well. Given these results, should i not follow up further (i.e. biopsy, etc).
Systemically, i have night sweats every night, have fevers ( up to 104) at least 3-4 times a month, am always exhausted and never hungry and have lost about 20 pounds since all these symptoms started 4-5 months ago.
What could be causing all these symptoms? Is there another kind of test i should ask for? Are long lymph nodes normal? Thanks!

Brief Answer:
Biopsy test
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Since you are having neck lump and having symptoms of fever, exhaustion and have lost 20 pounds of weight i would advise you to do a biopsy test to rule out malignancy.
Long lymph nodes are not normal and i will also advise you to do a PET scan.

Thank you for your quick response. I was just wondering if you would consider 2.5 cm long? Also, are you saying that lymph nodes that look normal on ultrasound can still be malignant? Just trying to get all the information so i can talk my dr into getting a biopsy if necessary. Thanks!
Brief Answer:
Average lymph node size varies from 0.5 to 2 cm
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Normal lymph node size varies from 0.5 to 2 cm.
You are having 2.5 cm long lymph nodes with symptoms such as anorexia, weight loss and fever and that is why biopsy is necessary to rule out cancer.
Lymph nodes that look normal on ultrsound can be malignant and that is why you must do the above test to rule out malignancy.
