I am have problems with balance , equilibrium and thought process.
What causes the soft mushy spot?
Should I go to hospital, or is it just a concussion that nothing can be done about?
You should be examined by a qualified neurologist
Detailed Answer:
Although I would not want you to go spend the next 10-12 hrs. sitting in the ER for something that happened 2 nights ago I would like to hear that you got seen by if not a neurologist at least your primary care physician by tomorrow. The fact, that you fell and got knocked unconscious is a serious concussion. If you were out for any more than 15 min. of time then, you are at risk for convulsions in the future and this needs to be thought about and reviewed by the neurologist.
I would also do a good solid baseline neurological exam from a cognitive point of view (memory, logical thinking, etc.) and then, follow this through time every 1-2 years to see if any changes take place that may be attributable to the fall.
It is understandable that you are having some of those problems right now in the immediate aftermath of the fall. However, I think that an imaging study of the brain is also warranted since there is the chance that you could contused or "bruised" the brain. There is also the possibility you may have caused a SUBDURAL HEMATOMA which if present is probably very small at this point but they can bleed very very slowly and so you may not really "feel" much of anything until it gets to the point where you become so lethargic and sleepy that you have a hard time getting out of the bed. That is not good so you need AT LEAST a CT scan of the brain if not an MRI.
The soft soft is the least of your worries right now. That the subcutaneous hematoma underneath your scalp. Nothing's going happen with that except it's going to be a soft mushy spot. You should make sure that it didn't actually open and then, clot over by the time you woke up since that could mean an infection if anything invaded an open wound if one was present.
We can DO A LOT MORE for concussions now than ever before and if at the very least the incident was document then, things such as WHY DID YOU FALL, and what is the risk of FALLING AGAIN can be answered more definitively. Balance and equilibrium can be improved and worked on using exercises. Also, it needs to be determined why a 44 year old woman who is otherwise probably healthy took such a spill and knocked herself so out that she had to wake up from the incident herself. That one detail would have as much importance to me to figure out as well as anything else.
I hope this addresses your concerns. If so, may I ask for the favor of a HIGH STAR RATING on our interaction and some brief written feedback.
