Question: My husband, in the last two days, has developed a lump on the side of his face, under the skin on his upper jaw, which is painful. It is approximately the size of a walnut. As of this morning, his eye is red too. In the last month he did have a cavity filled but this does not appear to be a dental problem. He is also complaining of a sore throat.
Brief Answer:
Infection.
Detailed Answer:
Hello!
Thank you for the query.
Painful lump always indicates an infection. It can be an abscess caused by tooth infection (which seems to be the reason even if the tooth is not painful). Also parotid gland is in mentioned location which can give such pain. Ear infection or throat infection can give enlarged lymph nodes and such symptoms.
As face is in a very close neighborhood to the brain, any infection in this area can give brain inflammation. That is why, your husband should not leave it alone.
Please take him to the doctor (laryngologist or surgeon). Ultrasound of this area might be necessary in case of any doubts. For sure he needs antibiotics. Dentist should be also consulted.
Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.
