What Causes Meningioma In Left Frontal Region Of Head?

default
Posted on Sat, 13 Sep 2014
Question: A recent CT of my head revealed an incidental fiding of a 1cm meningioma (calcification) in the left frontal region of my head. I asked my physician if I needed to be concerned and she said no, it was calcified and old. My question is this . . . could something like this cause out-of-the-blue panic like attacks and XXXXXXX panic attacks as well? Also, is a CT able to determine if something is benign or malignant? Thank you. XXXXXXX
The patient profile says I am male; it should be female (not that that really matters). Thank you., non smoker, non drinker.

Brief Answer:
Please attach the CT scan

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX
Thanks for using healthcaremagic.

A meningioma is generally benign and asymptomatic and unlikely to cause panic attacks. The pathology of panic attacks is disturbance in neurotransmitter like serotonin and nor epinephrine but there is no structural abnormality.

Generally a CT scan is not enough to determine whether the meningioma is malignant or benign, but by looking at the characteristic of lesion a suspicion can be made.

As your lesion is only 1 cm in such cases it is likely to be benign. But to be safer side it is recommended that a serial monitoring should be done by neuroimaging. If the tumor is malignant it will increase in size very rapidly and may cause symptoms. The most common symptoms of meningioma are double vision, focal seizures, increased intracranial pressure (headache, projectile vomiting without nausea) and progressive weakness of legs and incontinence. If you are having one among these symptoms it is better to resect without waiting for enlargement. If there are no such symptoms conservative management is recommended.

You are requested to attach your CT scan as well as radiologist report so I can see in person and can provide second opinion.
Thanks and Regards
Dr Ashok

Hello Dr. XXXXXXX Thank you for your thorough response. Because it is Saturday, I will not be able to get the radiologist report and CT scan until Monday or Tuesday of next week. I will call them Monday to see if they can email both documents to me. When they do, I will upload them to you.

It should be noted that my doctor said the meninogioma looked old. What is interesting is that I had an MRI of the brain in 2012 because I was doing "word" jumbles when I spoke. For example. instead of saying "I need to call XXXXXXX to go to lunch", I would say "I need to call lunch to go to XXXXXXX " This started happening after I had an endoscopy so I blamed it on the anesthesia even though I had the MRI almost a year after the endo and I was still doing the word jumbles. The word jumbles seem to have cleared up now. However, the results of the MRI at that time (about XXXXXXX 2012) were completely normal.

If it takes awhile to get the hospital to email me the CT results and scan, I will just pay the extra $35 as I do believe I have a limited amount of time to get the information to you. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
You can put two more follow up queries

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX
Thanks for your feedback.

In case you have MRI report please mail me along with CT report. It is quite possible to go undetected in earlier stage of tumor. By comparing MRI (2012) and CT (2014)
I will be in better position to tell you the prognosis.

You do not need to pay again. You have option of writing two more times with the amount you paid already to healthcaremagic. In case they do not allow you you can write a direct query to me so you will get your answer directly from me.

Thanks and Regards
Dr Ashok Kumar
