What Causes Mildly Altered AST Levels Inspite Of Stopping Alcohol?
Question: I got back my 3rd blood test results. my first test came back ast 66 alt 18. Second test was ast 99 alt 27. Dr ordered another test and ultrasound. Stopped drinking for 1 month. Ultrasound came back good and blood test was good too on antibodies. My ast was only mildly elevated at 37. my alt lowered all the way down to 9.
Should I still be concerned with the ratio of my ast/alt?
Brief Answer:
No reason to be concerned.
Detailed Answer:
Hello!
Thank you for the query.
No, you should not be concerned. As you could see, avoiding alcohol allows liver to regenerate. Such regeneration lasts from 1 to 3 months. As your last liver tests are almost fine, we can say that the alcohol was main factor of liver problems.
So please continue avoiding alcohol, fatty foods, spicy foods, painkillers and have your liver tests done after 2 moths.
Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.

Thank you Dr. I was still feeling concerned because of the 4:1 ratio against the alt and I've read more than 2:1 is alcoholic liver damage.
Brief Answer:
.
Detailed Answer:
As long as this liver tests are in referential ranges or just slightly elevated, ast/alt ratio does not tell anything. It is used to determine the possible cause in case of elevated liver enzymes.
So no need to worry.
