What Causes Minty Taste In Mouth After A Root Canal Treatment?

Posted on Mon, 10 Feb 2014
Question: HI, I occasionally get a minty taste in my mouth on the left side. I recently (about one month ago) had a root canal followed by a permanent crown on the left side of the mouth. The crown is made of porcelain outside with a metallic inside. Is it possible that there is some leakage happening from the crown? I called my dentist but he said that should not be the case and asked me to wait a few days more and see what happens. I get this taste on and off and it also seems to make me feel a little bit uneasy, though the taste itself is not bad (a bit like toothpaste, or mouthwash). I have not chewed gum or anything, since the treatment, so not sure why this taste keeps coming. Please could you suggest what the problem might be and how I should take this forward since the dentist does not see me and has asked me to wait. Since the taste is in the mouth, I do inadvertently swallow the saliva. Can this lead to any complications in the stomach? Thanks

Brief Answer: I do'not feel this is dental related. Detailed Answer: Hello there, Welcome to XXXXXXX Forum, Presence of minty taste in your mouth cannot be related with the root canal treated tooth on which porcelain crown is placed. Still, i will suggest you to get a full mouth scaling and polishing done. There could be presence of typical symptoms of GERD (gasterointestinal reflux disease), acid reflux, another possible cause can be beginning of diabetes, other common causes are sinus infection, flu, common cold, strept throat, dry mouth. I would suggest you to consult a PHYSICIAN before consulting the dentist. Get a complete examination and evaluation, get your blood sugar level examined, so that the exact cause can be ruled out. At home follow the following measures; -Take a multivitamin pill daily for one month and observe for any change. -Maintain a good oral hygiene, use soft toothbrush and hypoallergenic toothpaste. -Avoid spicy and reserved food items. -Take plenty of fruits and veggies in the diet. -Take warm soups in the diet. -Drink plenty of water and keep yourself hydrated. This will surely subside your condition. Take care! Dr Qazi Ammara. -

Since the tase is coming only from one side of the mouth, it lead me to think that this is a dental problem. However if it is a gastro issue, should this not be coming from the entire mouth? I can feel some strangeness in an around the area where the crown is places. The crown itself is comfortable and I do not have any problem with it otherwise. But if you suggest it is a general physician problem, I will stick to that. I will also take an appointment for scaling as suggested. thanks

Brief Answer: Physician consultation is appropriate before dentist visit. Detailed Answer: Thanks for the prompt reply, Even though its on one side of your mouth, I would still like to exclude gasterointestinal issues before relating it to dental problem. Excessive salivation on the same side may be a cause which also needs to be looked by your physician. Therefore see your physician before consulting the dentist. I also suggest you to take warm saline rinses 3-4 times a day and antiseptic mouthwash gargles twice. Take care! Dr Qazi Ammara.
