Question: I'm trying to decide if I need to go to the ER. I'm experiencing moderate ache in the middle of my back. Not my spine. Coming from inside. I have chest discomfort that comes and goes (for about a week). I am female 53 excellent health exercise 5 days a week. I have heard that these can be cardiac symptoms for women.

Brief Answer:
It would be advisable to go to the ER and have a clinical examination&tests

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome to HCM and thanks for your query.
I understand your concern.
The chest pain due to a coronary artery disease can be felt anywhere from the umbilicus up to the lower jaw. An important factor that points to a pain of heart origin is that it usually comes on with exercise like walking up hill or lifting a weight and is worse if the exertion is after a meal. The pain is usually relieved by rest.
The other common causes of a pain in the back but not from the spine is a peptic ulcer, pancreatic or gall bladder pain.
It would be advisable to go to the ER , have an EKG and the required tests to diagnose the pain.
There is nothing to worry as whatever be the cause of the pain, it can be treated and is unlikely to be a serious problem at this stage.
I would be interested in knowing the findings and your progress.
You are welcome to contact me any time and it shall be a pleasure to be of help to you.
With best wishes,
