What Causes Mucus In Urine?
Question: My toddler has clear mucus in urine...I don't know for sure if it's coming from her urethra or her vagina...Test results show no Urinary Tract infection...She has seen many specialists including a Urologist, a Pediatrian, and a Pediatric Gynocologist, as she was very prone to UTIs when she was a baby but no one could figure out why...she has had ultrasounds to check for structural abnormalities which were negative, a DSMA scan to check for renal scarring which was negative, she has no kidney reflux...in the end, we were told she was just extra sensitive to the bacteria in her diaper...since being potty trained she hasn't had another, but now from time to time I notice strands of mucus in her urine, and sometimes even blobs!...I also notice that the insides of her vagina lips always look a bit red, and recently it looks as if dry skin might be rubbing off?...She doesn't seem bothered or uncomfortable or sick, but I'm still concerned...My doctors seem to think it's not a huge issue saying it's probably Vaginitis and she'll grow out of it... To me a toddler with mucus coming out of either her urethra or her vagina doesn't seem normal to me...please help
Brief Answer:
Avoid diapers
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing to us.
From your description and history it looks like the mucus is a result of vaginitis.
Try clotrimazole ointment to treat which is usually prescribed for candid vaginitis.
Avoid diapers as these could cause more inflammation.
Moreover try syndet soaps instead of regular baby soaps.
The mucous discharge will settle soon.
Urinary tract infection has been ruled out already, so need to worry.
Wishing your toddler good health and speedy recovery.
