What Causes Muscle Pain In Right Clavicle Area?
Originally, I thought I had injured it due to incorrect sleeping and received a swedish massage to the area approximately 1.5 months ago. She used heavy pressure to the right anterior clavicle as that was the area that was giving me trouble. Pain increased a few days after and has been intermittent ever since. Some days I think it might be getting better and then it intensifies again with no muscle strain or injury.
My neck now appears to have some swelling on both the anterior and lateral sides on the right as can be seen in the image. The left side clearly has a "neck roll" (lol) where the right side is filled out. Moderate, intermittent, throbbing pain sensation presents anterior/lateral and in the "crook" between my neck and collar bone when I look down and to the right, almost as if I was resting my head on my shoulder, but closer to chin touching the chest. Pain subsides when I straighten my head out.
No edema present in the thyroid area or above / below. Annual physical approx. 3 months ago, all lab values WNL including tsh.
Is it possible that this is simply muscle pain/swelling or something more severe?
most likely due to musuloskeletal condition.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for your query under HCM forum.
The pain you have in clavicular area right side, seems to disturb your simple neck movements-- thus disturbing your routine life. I understand your concern. The pain like you have can arise from various reasons,like-
- Boney weakness due to calcium & vitamin D deficiency./infections of bone/ fracture.
- Problems like injury/ sprain /infections of muscle or tendons,
- inflammation of joints of clavicle with chest bone & shoulder blade/ inflammation of bursae, ligaments involved in the joints,
- Some times degenerative changes in cervical spine/ cervical discs/ cervical rib - can press/ kink/ irritate the muscles supplied, OR the tissue in contact to cause such pain/swelling.
- Some times lung/ heart problems too can cause such pain.
From the history you are giving, I feel your problem to be related either to Cervical spondylosis or cervical rib - which irritate the muscles in certain position/after exertion- & cause the pain/swelling. In this context, I would advise you to consult an Orthopedic surgeon. After extensive physical examination he will advise for investigations as per his impression.
* Investigations may range from simple blood levels of calcium/vitamin D/ R factor ,X ray cervical spine , CT scan or MRI of the region as per need.
* after pin pointing the cause specific treatment would be offered to you. Which may range FROM medicines( antibiotics, anti inflammatory drugs, calcium, Vitamin D, Reduction of fracture,Physiotherapy, TO surgical interventions as per the diagnosis.
Till then,
- Avoid exertion to the part./ movements that cause pain.
- avoid massage. Hot or clod packs would help.
Please don't worry, proper evaluation of the problem under an expert care followed by specific treatment would help you to overcome your trouble.
I hope. the answer is both informative & helpful to you. Any follow up query is welcome.Take care.
Thanks.
