What Causes Nasal Bleeding While On Nutritional Supplements To Treat High Blood Pressure?

default
Posted on Tue, 24 Jan 2017
Question: I've been taking a lot of supplements to lower my BP rather than prescription meds. As I go along, I add more different supplements. After adding Kyolic formula 109 blood pressure formula, hawthorne berry extract, beet root extract, NACETYL Cysteine, I started getting nosebleeds randomly in one nostril. I stopped taking Kyolic over a month ago, same with Hawthorne berry extract (which I read can cause nosebleeds), stopped NACYSTEINE 3 weeks ago. I'm still taking L Arginine, L Citrulline and beet root. Now I've read that beet root and watermelon (L CitrullIne) open up the blood vessels and relaxes the walls in addition to producing good amounts of nitric acid.

I had a particularly heavy nosebleed on Dec. 22nd causing me to visit the ER where they gave me nose pitchers and cauterized the blood vessels in the bleeding nostril. 4 days later, another nosebleed in the same cauterized nostril. Sporadic since then.

The ER ruled out thin blood after blood work. They blamed it on the cold weather, allergies, and dry indoor heating.

Can it be the added supplements or is my labile BP the cause.

I have an appointment with an ENT XXXXXXX 6th.

Getting tired of this. Help!

Brief Answer:
Its you blood pressure not supplements!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for choosing health care magic for your query !

You have mentioned you have labile Blood pressure and were prescribe with anti hypertensive mediaction which you are not taking.
The problem which you are facing (nose bleed ) is termed medically as EPISTAXIS.
Nosebleed, also known as a epistaxis, is the common occurrence of bleeding from the nose. It is usually noticed when the blood drains out through the nostrils.Although Blunt trauma (usually a sharp blow to the face such as a punch, Foreign bodies (such as fingers during nose-picking) and allergic Inflammatory reaction are usually the most common case of epistaxis; Yet in your case it can be because of high uncontrolled blood pressure, high blood pressure can damage the wall of capillaries in nasal cavity and can lead to bleeding from nose.So my advice is to keep your blood pressure under control.

You said that you are on a lot of supplements , but frankly speaking supplement causing a nose bleed(severe) is a rare case scenario; the culprit in your case is your blood pressure .

So start taking the prescribed medicines ;at a age of 74 target blood pressure should be less then 140/90mm of hg .You can continue with your supplements ,but medications are important till target blood pressure is achieved.

Advice
Start medication as soon as possible and keep a record of blood pressure every third day,so that doses may be increase or decreased.

When on board my cruise these past 10 days, I had a piece of glass embedded in my sole of foot. Ship's doctors removed it and also took my BP. It was 147/78. They didn't consider it high. The original supplements I started taking brought my BP down to 139/72 to anywhere between that number and 149/79. My GP wants me down to 128/68. At my age, don't think that's feasible. My BP as I said is labile and goes up and down like a yoyo depending on what is currently causing me stress since I'm a Type A personality. Others have recommended mediation to control my systolic number since my diastolic number is not bad.

I'm trying to do control with natural supplements rather than artifical chemicals disguised as meds. My GP understands that and has even prescribed Red Yeast Rice ( which I learned could be dangerous so I did not take it) along with 300 mgs of Magnesium. Instead of ingesting the magnesium the benefits of which can be lessened by the digestive system, I am rubbing pure 100% magnesium oil on my knees, instep, feet and arms daily.

I have a cuff BP monitor and have the recordings of my BP as taken to show my GP. It may be my labile BP but this problem started after adding the extra supplements when my BP was under good control with the original BP supements I had been taking. It seems too coincidental to me that the nosebleeds started after the supplement additions when for the past year I have not had any nosebleeds without them.

Brief Answer:
Its not because of blood pressure!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Blood pressure has been classified into five catagories according to JACC.

Normal blood pressure < 120/80
prehypertensive stage is 120-139/80-89
grade 1 (mild ) is 140-159/90-99
grade 2 (moderate ) is 160-179/100-109
above that is severe hypertension.
As stated by you your systolic blood pressure is just borderline mild hypertensive ,and i don't think that blood pressure in your case is a cause of bleed, a detailed ent check up is required .
If you feel that bleeding increase after taking any particular supplement then just stop the supplement for few days and see the effect.

advice
thorough ent check up
