What Causes Nausea And Insomnia After Having Naltraxone?

default
Posted on Wed, 5 Nov 2014
Question: I was prescribed Naltraxone to help deal with the inclination to drink alcohol. During 9 days it caused much nausea and extreme insomnia. Since insomnia was a cause of the desire to drink alcohol, the effect was paradoxical – I felt like drinking alcohol! Any suggestions?

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

Naltrexone is generally used as aversion therapy for alcohol deaddiction. That means it should be started after all withdrawal features are under controlled.
In your case as per your narration no substitution therapy given to prevent/treat withdrawal features.

Generally we use Ativan(lorazepam) or Librium(chlordiazepoxide) for substitution withdrawal therapy for alcohol deadditcion depending upon duration, frequency, quantity and type of alcohol intake as well as liver function tests. These medicines will not allow to come withdrawal features like insomnia, tremors, anxiety and also prevent craving.

You can ask your treating doctor about the same.

Hope i have answered your query, i will be happy to help further.
