What Causes Nausea And Vomiting After Having Celexa?

default
Posted on Fri, 1 Aug 2014
Question: Hello,
I wrote here before, and I'm not sure if the same person will answer, but I have another concern...
I'm on day 17 of 20 mg celexa, and my side effects are still pretty bad, especially nausea and jelly like legs.
Yesterday is the first time I threw up. I also take 0.5 mg klonopin in the morning, which helps with anxiety and panic, but not the side effects.
For nausea I take gravol.
Is it normal that after 17 days of 20 mg to have worst nausea than at the beginning? I felt good for a while, but the past couple of days were the worst.
Should I increase or wait? I really cannot function because of nausea.

Brief Answer:
Switching a drug would be required

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for choosing health care magic for posting your query.

I have gone through your question in detail and I can understand what you are going through.

Its unfortunate that you are not able to tolerate celexa this time. Well it does happen some times. Now that ots 17days of bad nausea it would be wise to either reduce the dose of celexa to 10mg and look for the reduction in side effects over next 7 days and if still not then a change in the medication woukd be required. I guess you will have to go with either venlafaxine or desvenlafaxine or mirtazapine etc.

Side effect of a drug can develop anytime and its not necessary that the side effect should be worse on initial days only. But there is n o need to panic as all of this is reversible. You may continnue with the clonazepam to control anxiety.
Hope I am able to answer your concerns.

If you have any further query, I would be glad to help you.

If not, you may close the discussion and if possible you may rate the answer for me, so that I get a good feedback.

Thank you so much...what about increasing to 30mg?
When i was on cipralex in 2009, i had found my magic dose at 20 mg where i felt excellent, and thats why i stopped the cipralex (lorazepam)....
My doc told me that the equivalent dose for 20 mg cipralex is 30 mg celexa.
Do you think if i increase at 30 mg celexa i would feel better?
Thank you again,
doctor

Brief Answer:
Not a wise idea

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for the follow up.
No it will not be a wise idea to increase the dose further. What you are experiencing is the serotonin side effect of celexa and increasing the dose will increase the side effect further. I would suggest step down as of now to 10mg and then increase further to 30 mg gradually over next 2-3 months.

Thank you again...however, when i started this med, i started with 5 mg for 5 days then 10 mg for 8 days and then to 20...today is my day 18 on 20 mg.
I had the same side effects on each dose. I think 5 and 10 mg were the worst.
At 20, i felt relief for a while, but since 2 days ago the nausea has gotten worst. I dont have racing thoughts anymore, no panic attacks....just anxiety which is brought on by nausea.
I feel like if i didnt have nausea, i would not have the induced nausea anxiety.
I feel better late afternoon...my mornings are the worst. It puts me down so much.
I was prescribed clonazepam to make these side effects easier, but it doesnt seem to help much.
Im afraid if i go back to 10, i will be in the same condition, because i tried 10.

Brief Answer:
You should try other options

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for the follow up.
Well in this case you should consider trying other drugs like venlafaxine or desvenlafaxine or paroxetine. All these drugs are good options for anxiety disorder. Celexa is not suiting you and you should better discontinue it.
Hope this helps
Kind regards
