What Causes Nausea And Vomiting While Undergoing Chemotherapy?

default
Posted on Fri, 24 Oct 2014
Question: My Mom aged 45 is admitted for AML-M2. First induction is done now(7days of chemo) and then we did a bone marrow test and the blast is less than 5%. So Doctor started the consolidation treatment ( Injection each day).
1. Still she gets fever (101,102) everyday. Is this fine?
2. She is not able to eat any solid items, she takes only milk, rice conjee, juices all liquid items. If she try to eat normal solid food, she vomits. Why is this? When will she be able to eat normally?
3.Doctor suggested for bone marrow transplantation. For that my Mom's siblings are called for some matching test. Doctor told in the cytogenetic study she falls under Indermediate Risk category and thus he suggests to go for transplantation.
What is the risk in this for both donor and recipient?
Is there any side effects for this? If so what are they and how severe it is?

Brief Answer:
blood culture and antiemetic tablets

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Since your mother is undergoing consolidation treatment and if her fever persists for more than 100.4 D F for 3 consecutive days she needs to do a blood culture test to find the cause of fever.

Chemotherapy can cause nausea and vomiting which may cause difficulty in eating solid foods.I would advise her to take metoclopramide tablets thrice daily before food for 5 days. Discuss about this your doctor.
She will be able to eat normally in about 2 weeks of time.

Bone marrow transplantation can cause weakness for the donor.
He/she may have trouble walking for a few days. The area where the bone marrow was taken out might feel sore for a few days. Pain reliever tablet has to be taken for the discomfort. It takes a couple of weeks before the donor feels fully recovered.

Bone marrow transplantation can cause infection for the recipient.
The immune system becomes weak after chemotherapy lowering the body's defenses against bacteria, viruses, and fungi. That means bone marrow transplantation recipients are especially vulnerable to infection during this early period of treatment.

Most infections that occur during the first few weeks after a transplant are caused by organisms that are already in the patient's lungs, sinuses, skin, and intestines. Fortunately, most of these infections are relatively easy to treat with antibiotics.

Thanks a lot for the reply doctor.

She is given antibiotics, fever tablets. She gets fever, then they give medicine, then she will be fine for sometime but again she gets it.

As per Doctor advise blood and platelets are given.

Does the transplantion takes places immediately after consolidation or is there any time gap between that?

How long does the transplantation takes?

How long does hospitalization needed?

My mom has got red spots all through out the body? We are told that its because of low platelets count. When can we expect it going away like after consolidation or complete treatement?

She has lost her hair. Will she get it only after the entire treatment gets completed or how is it?

Brief Answer:
immediately after consolidation therapy

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Transplantation takes immediately after consolidation therapy.

Bone marrow transplantation can be given as a intravenous drip through central line over 3 to 4 hours.Central lines are specialised forms of intravenous lines, being put into large veins.

Due to the risk of infection she needs to stay in a single room for around 1 week.

Red spots on your moms body will go away after consolidation treatment.

She will get back her hair after 1 month of completion of treatment.
