What Causes Nausea, Vomiting, Diarrhea And Constipation While On Bydureon?
Question: Hello Dr., First before anything else, please except my sincere thanks for your valuable time. My doctor prescribed Bydureon for me about two months ago. The first month I only took it twice and experience no side effects. Since then I have taken it four weeks in a row as prescribed, and about the third week I began experiencing nausea , Vomiting, diarrhea and constipation. It is now about eight or nine days since my last dose. Given this timeframe could the Bydureon still be making me nauseous? I know that it's possible for the symptoms to be caused from something else entirely different. But I've never had nausea problems or any of the other symptoms in my life. So if the Bydureon is the culprit could it still be what's making me nauseous even after not taking it for eight or nine days?
Brief Answer:
Can be due to extended side effect, check liver function also
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome and thanks for your query.
Nausea, loss of appetite and bowel irregularities are common with Bydureon and are related to it's mode of action. Most people get used to it after a few weeks or months. The side effects usually lasts a few days. If it persists more than 10 days, it may be good to check the liver enzymes. Sub clinical liver inflammation due to certain viruses also produce nausea.
Do get back to me if you have further questions.

Thank you Dr. Nobel,
What does sub-clinical mean?. Could the Bydureon cause liver inflammation, and if so will it resolve after stopping the drug? Aa few months ago my liver enzymes were slightly high, and I have a fatty liver. Could these be contributing factors? Lastly, if it is a virus, what could cause that? Although viral, could an antibiotic or any med destroy the virus?
Thanks AGAIN,
Gene

Brief Answer:
Discussion follows
Detailed Answer:
Hello Gene,
Subclinical means the inflammation is not severe enough to produce overt signs like jaundice .
Liver inflammation can cause nausea. You are prone for non alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) related to diabetes and obesity.
Several viruses like EB virus which produces sore throat and URTI and hepatitis viruses A,B,C,Dand E can cause liver inflammation. All are treatable.
Hepatitis is not a recognized side effect of Bydureon.
If you would like me to monitor your diabetes and help you control it and your weight on a long term basis with or without Bydureon, you are welcome to check out the diabetes control package at
