What Causes Negative Pregnancy Test With Mild Brownish Vaginal Discharge?

Question: Hi,
My period is late this months. Today is the 31st day of cycle and I have some brown discharge. I tested yesterday for pregnancy and it was negative. My question is should I consider this brown discharge as the first day of period? I have some cramps as well.
Thank you for your reply!

Brief Answer:
It is day 1 if bleeding starts in next 12 hours.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
A negative pregnancy test with a mild brownish discharge rules out the pregnancy. The brown discharge should be considered as day 1 of your periods if your full flow starts in next 12 hours. In case the proper bleeding is delayed then the day one pad is soaked is considered as day 1. This can happen due to stress, anxiety or a mild hormonal imbalance.
