Question: I had a norovirus infection over 2 weeks weeks ago. Just vomiting no diarrhoea (my husband got it too 2 days later - more severe than me). I continued to have tummy ache and cramps. 4 days ago the nausea returned. I feel weak, spent 3 days in bed, had night sweats and am constantly nauseaous. No vomiting, no diarrhoea, no appetite. I am female and 46 years old.

Brief Answer:
Acute viral Gastroenteritis will take 10-12 days.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for choosing HealthcareMagic for your query.
Have gone through your details and i appreciate your concerns.

Most likely you and your husband are suffering from Acute Gastroenteritis. It is an intestinal infection marked by diarrhoea, cramps, nausea, vomiting and fever. However its not necessary that all symptoms are there in a single patient. As its viral gastroenteritis symptoms may appear within one to three days after you're infected and can range from mild to severe. Symptoms usually last just a day or two, but occasionally they may persist as long as 10 days.Highly contagious as both of you are already infected keep childrens away(dont share food or water).
Take probiotic VSL#3 twice daily. Our body has its own enviroment called gut flora..Gut flora is the complex community of microorganisms that live in the digestive tracts of humans. The intestinal microflora is a complex ecosystem containing over 400 bacterial species. Gut infection destroys this flora hence probiotic should be taken.
Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration–You need to drink more than usual to replace the fluids lost from vomiting and diarrhoea. Water is best, but you could also try fruit juice and soup.
Take paracetamol for any fever or aches and pains.
Get plenty of rest.
If you feel like eating, try small amounts of plain foods, such as soup, rice, pasta and bread.
Use special rehydration drinks made from sachets electral solution to maintain depleted electrolyte levels in serum.
Take anti-vomiting medication (such as zofran 4 mg twice daily ).
Meanwhile also get a stool routine and microscopy test done. As if it will be positive for bacteria, antibiotics will be prescribed. It will most likely take about 5-7 days for the episode to end.

In first line you have mentioned just vomiting. However in last line its no vomiting. Please correct.

Thanks

Thank you for your detailed reply

I vomitted on the first day (30. June), now I only have stomach ache, nausea and unhealthy looking diarrhea (orange colour). I was worried that I might have a gallbladder problem, but if you think it is still all related to the initial vital infection I am very relieved. I had this vomitting bug before and it usually cleared within 2 -3 days. The lentghty duration this time around had me worried. I am already on pro biotics and will follow your advice regarding staying hydrated and getting a stool sampleanalysed (just in case).

Kind regards,

XXXX

Follow up answer.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again,As explained earlier all the above are clinical features of gastroenteritis. In your words-"I vomited on the first day (30. June), now I only have stomach ache, nausea and unhealthy looking diarrhea (orange color)".

See it an be any thing from gallbladder to pancreas to colon cancer but try to understand that a doctor always follows a protocol.
Initially you said that you had a viral infection 2 weeks back(normal span of virus in body is about 2-3 weeks with proper supportive therapy). Secondly as you hubby was infected soon after you it can be recurrent reinfection in your case also.

Some times due to the viral attack our body becomes week. Its during this period of weakness when some bad bacterias and protozoan's aslo attack the body can again cause recurrent enetritis.

" I had this vomitting bug before and it usually cleared within 2 -3 days. The lentghty duration this time around had me worried. "-Again suggestive that things are recurrent(infection).Proper eradication of bacteri or protozoa is required.
Who said that its Novavirus?Any stool test done?
Just follow what ever i adviced for 5 days at least.
A short term anti bacterial therapy with'
Tab Metronidazole 400mg thrice daily with food
and A pack (Azithromycin) once daily for 3 days would be good for you.
Antispasmodic like dicyclomine 10mg twice daily can be taken for pain.
Thanks you.
