What Causes Nose Bleeding?

Question: i have been having excessive nose bleeds on one side of the nose only, i went to the Dr. three times and they have burned it twice, i was told i had a vitamin deficiency of vitamin K, if it happens again, my Dr. told me to go to the ER for a medical procedure. My last incident happened yesterday and ever since i have had fresh blood when i clear my throat, what should i do?
the only medications i use are for high blood pressure
lisinopril-hctz 20/12 5 mg tab one a day and careditol 12.5 tab one a day

Hi,
Thank you for your query.
1. The fresh blood when you clear your throat may signify a posterior nasal bleed. If the cauterization was done without a nasal endoscope, get a nasal endoscopy done.
2. Your blood tests and coagulogram, are within normal limits. A repeated one sided nasal bleed (epistaxis) is less likely to be due to a a generalized Vit. K deficiency or hypertension (if your blood pressure readings are fine).
3. There is also not likely to be the side effect of your medication.
4. During the nasal endoscopy, precise cauterization of the bleeding vessel/s can be done.
If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them.
Regards.

I don't have health insurance and if I end up in the ER could be costly, any idea advice I could do? Thanks

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for writing back.
1. You may apply an ice pack around the nose and forehead. Get your blood pressure readings checked. Do not blow your nose forcefully. If you sneeze, do so with your mouth open. Certain medications such as etamsylate and tranexamic acid will help in the short term, if you can get them OTC or on prescription.
2. If this helps, you can schedule a routine visit.
3. Any other intervention has to be done in a hospital or clinic.
If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them.
Regards.
