What Causes Nosebleed And Red Eyes While Suffering From Viral Fever In Children?

default
Posted on Thu, 9 Apr 2015
Question: My 3 years old son had viral fever on Saturday 14th March and has healed away yesterday by daily dosage of Calpol suspension (4times 4ml). For last two days his coughing started and for coughing we gave him XXXXXXX syrup(3 times 5ml). Along with the viral fever and coughing he also have had running nose and sneezing. From last two days mucus coming out of nose contains blood substance (not much but around 30% of mucus coming out contains red blood cell like material).
Also today his one eye is getting reddish.
He doesn't have any fever as of today.
Please suggest if the little blood in mucus (if it gets increased) along with one red eye, is a concern or is a symptom of something else.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing to us.
From your history I understand that your child had fever for the past 5 to 6 days. Even if the fever is settled now the current symptoms you described like bleeding from the nose and redness of eye could indicate a serious infection like flu or leptospirosis or dengue.
I suggest you to take her to your doctor immediately.
The bleeding could be due to nose infection or it could be due to low platelets which can be identified by blood tests and local examination.
Continuing further medications by yourself can be harmful.
Ensure your son doesn't pick at the nose
To temporarily arrest bleed you can pinch the lowermost part of both nostrils together.
Ensure he drinks plenty of liquids to keep hydrated.
Wishing your son good health and speedy recovery.

Regards
Dr Arun
