Brief Answer:
Pinched nerve may be the reason.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

I had gone through your question and understand your concerns.

Your wife may suffer from Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS).

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition caused by a pinched median nerve in your wrist. You may feel numbness and tingling in thumb, index, middle and ring finger that comes and goes. Sometimes you may experience weakness in your hand.

There are some conditions like diabetes, hypothyroidism, obesity, pregnancy and making the same hand movements that may increase the risk of CTS.

Carpal tunnel syndrome may be confirmed by an electromyography (EMG). Also you should have an X-ray of the wrist to rule out bone problems.

Try to avoid activities that make symptoms worse and avoid sleeping on your hand. Also you can take Ibuprofen to relieve pain.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.
