Posted on Thu, 6 Oct 2016
Question: My left leg has been going numb. It started with an area above my knee under my quad muscle but now my whole upper, outer leg is numb, going down to my toe. I've been getting a muscle cramps in my legs that wake me up and send me in a panic cause I can't shake it off. I'm losing muscle in my legs and my legs have always been the strongest part of my body. I'm worried. I've never felt this weak.

Brief Answer:
Need MRI / spinal surgeon's advise & suitable treatment

Detailed Answer:
Hi, XXXXX,
Thanks for the query. I have gone through it & understand your concern.
* Numbness to any part is mostly due to altered nerve supply by compression / pinching of the nerve at local level or at spinal level. You started having numbness in leg above left knee to start with - which could have been attributed to pressure over the supplying nerve at sacroiliac joint, hip joint, sciatic foramen in pelvis or lumber spine
* - But as you describe progressive numbness to whole leg reaching up to toe, accompanied by unbearable muscle cramps, weakness & wasting of muscles & you don't have any other symptoms of infection or inflammation-....it seems to be compression of sciatic nerve at lumber 4-5 vertebrae due to disc problem.Affected nerve supply make the leg muscles irritated / weak to cause leg cramps & muscle wasting.
This can be due to excessive stress/ over use of back / having a fall to cause back injury. low vitamin D or calcium levels can add to the symptoms.
Nerve involvement due to genital herpes in mostly with strong pain .. so seems to be less possibility, still needs to be excluded.
* In this context you need investigations to find the root cause of the problems . MRI of lumber spine would help in pin pointing the site of cause . This would help in management.
I would advise for consultation of a spinal surgeon for his expert advise.
* Management would range from oral Non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs ( Ibuprofen )/ local steroid injection/Physio therapy, Physical therapy surgery as per severity of the cause & relief obtained.
This way a proper spotting of the cause followed by a specific treatment would ease you from the harassing problem.
I feel the answer has been informative & use ful to you. Any other information you want, please feel free to ask follow up query.

That makes sense and I have had sciatic nerve issues. I played softball for about 16 years as a catcher. And my neck is also really out of place it crackles when I pull my head back. My body is not feeling right
And I also have psoriasis. Could that cause arthritis? I'm having all kinds of issues. But my spine from my neck to my tailbone is my main concern. I've always dismissed my ailments hoping if I ignore it it will go away but now that I'm getting older I'm feeling everything

Brief Answer:
Treatment & prevention of spinal problem/ investigate for Psoriatic arthrit

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXX,
Thanks for the follow up query.that indicates your eagerness to get well soon... it's a good sign.. for you are still young & should have a healthy, successful life ahead.
Yes, now I get the cause for your cervical & lumber spinal problem.. I trust jumping, running with raised hands, sometimes falling .. constitutes the activities of a catcher.. which was probably not balanced with routine physical workouts , nutritional supplements for a player Or negligence to miner traumas while playing. There can be an excuse for mistakes in law.. but no excuse for health negligence..
So you should go with the spinal care under expert advise as suggested earlier... along with precautions in form of- sitting posture/ physiotherapy exercises / walking at a medium pace with your doctor's permission /calcium & vitamin D supplements as advised/ avoiding excessive physical stress, bending of neck or back, lifting weight, no out door games to stress your spine.
- About psoriasis, yes.. it is known to cause arthritis but the main symptoms are swelling & pain in the affected joint.Numbness can be only with pressure of a swollen joint or tendon on related nerve.
Sometimes the symptoms of pain may not appear in beginning.. while the joint remains affected,It can also cause swelling of tendons attached to joints.
Your starting problem with numbness behind Quadriceps.. can arise from swelling of quadriceps tendon attached to knee joint & press on supplying nerve.
* So it is advisable to get investigated for involvement of knee joint by psoriasis. The diagnosis will be by physical examination by a orthopedic surgeon along with excluding pathological tests for Rheumatic arthritis or gout as per need.
Hope.. you don't have Psoriatic arthritis. In case you are found to have psoriasis with joint involvement.. you will be given specific medications
I hope you find the answer satisfying. any information you want, please feel free to ask further follow up. I would be happy to help. Please take care .
