What Causes Occasional Pain At The Site Of Old Femur Fracture?

default
Posted on Fri, 28 Aug 2015
Question: I broke my femur as a teenager in 1976. I'm very active -tons of yoga, biking, etc. and for the first time in all these years, I'm feeling a pain deep in there that happens suddenly a few times a day and makes me wince. Is it worth being checked out? It's not a huge pain, but sometimes wobbles like something's misplaced. In 76, I had a rod inserted that came out in '77.

Brief Answer:
Can be due to osteoporosis or low vitamin D3 levels.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The occasional pain at the site of an old fracture can be due to post traumatic osteoarthritis or a decrease in Vitamin D3 levels. It can happen due to age related osteoporosis also. Since there is no pain during exercise any serious problem is not likely.
It is best to get it examined by your orthopedician and get an X-ray and blood tests done. This can be resolved with proper supplements.
I hope this answers your query.

2 questions. Thanks so much!

I started using a stand-up desk a month ago, and then the pain started, but I guess that isn't to blame. Question 1: Do you think it's OK to stand all day plus get lots of exercise?

I just sent off a blood sample today for a home Vitamin D test, so that's great that you think I should have one. I'm vegan and in a Northern climate (Chicago) but I take the maximum supplement recommended for D3 already.

Question 2: Why do X-rays if you're convinced it's not serious? Thanks so much for the quick response!

Brief Answer:
X-rays are to detect osteoporosis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
1. Yes. Standing or doing lots of exercise will not do any harm as you are already used to all of this.
2. X-rays will help in detecting any osteoporosis.
Hope my answer is helpful.
