What Causes One To Hear The Heart Beat?

default
Posted on Fri, 22 Apr 2016
Question: I regularly hear my heart beat. For example when I go to sleep if I sleep on my side, I am hearing my heart beat in my ear. If I lay on my back I don't hear it. It isn't fast. Seems about normal when I count the beats. I had an EKG a few years ago and it was fine. I am not on any prescription medication. YYYY@YYYY

Detailed Answer:
Hello & thank you for submitting your question to HCM.

Believe it or not, this is actually a common phenomenon. Some patients report that the sound is more intense depending which side they are laying on. This is in part due to the pressure changes that occur within the circulatory system which are positional-dependent. It is good that you've brought this to the attention of your physician and had an EKG. It is also very important to monitor your blood pressure. It would be reasonable to schedule a check up (if it has been more than 6 months since your last one) to have your blood pressure checked. If the sound becomes more intense or it sounds as if your heart is racing or beating irregularly, please see your physician for another cardiac evaluation. Otherwise, there is not too much else to eliminate the sound.

Sincerely,
Dr Galamaga
