What Causes Pain Above The Groin In The Pelvic Region?

default
Posted on Thu, 31 Jul 2014
Question: i have a pain just above my groin on the right side after i play squash for a long time. The pain remains for a couple of days and then subsides. If i do any other kind of exercise like cycling or running or swimming, then there is no pain at all, irrespective of the duration of the exercise. Some times i get a feeling that the pain radiates into my right scrotum, but i am unable to pin point the locus of the pain.

Brief Answer:
could be a sprained ligament

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX .

Welcome to HealthcareMagic.

You seem to sprain your pelvic ligament during the squash. Which gets healed in a few days if rested.

Playing squash involves stretching some time to extreme degrees to reach the ball, which is rarely necessary during running, swimming or cycling which the movement ranges are predefined.

I would suggest the you avoid those excessive stretching movements that cause ligament sprain and pain, during your squash.

That pain only may radiate to your scrotum. I also don't think that it is any herniahernia or any other pathology in that region.

Hope i have been helpful.

Dear Dr XXXXXXX

I am not too sure if it's a ligament sprain. I have had sprains earlier in my ankle and this one's unlike that. I say so because the pain is of the same magnitude as in does not increase even if I stretch . Also the pain is not superficial and feels inside, maybe two inches above the grin towards two o clock position (towards the centreline of the body).

Through all this I must say that the pain subsides after 2-3 days. For example , I played on Friday and was discomforted on Saturday and Sunday. There was low grade pain with every right step. But today , Tuesday, there is no pain. Are you certain this is a sprain? I love squash and don't see myself giving up. Can any pain relief ointment help?

Brief Answer:
I will go with sprain only

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

I am sorry that i didn't explained you in detail in my last reply, to cause this confusion.

This is not sprain of skeletal muscle ligament like you get in hands and legs.

The internal body organs are fixed in their position by various ligament. And while playing squash due to excessive body bouncing these get strained and cause pain.

I am going with sprain only because you pain starts with certain set of activities and subsides on rest.

The amount of bounce or rather sudden change in direction of body movements during running is much less than during playing squash.

And you don't need to stop playing squash for this altogether. Just reduce its intensity a bit to a level you are comfortable and still enjoy the game.

Hope i have been able to explain this time.

Dr. Ashish Verma

Thank you Dr XXXXXXX

I am relieved that its not anything more serious than a sprain. Just a couple of questions. How long is it required to be rested, before it disappears altogether? I make sure to warm up before i plunge into the game. Is there anything more that i need to do? Any precautions in particular? Is there anything that i can do to strengthen my internal ligaments?

I am aware of some of my friends having suffered ligament tears to ankle/ knee and never coming to the original shape/fitness that they were in, prior to the fracture. If i understand correctly, the ligament tears, or atleast some of them, take years to heal. Is this such a case?

Thank you.

Brief Answer:
a week or so

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

A week rest should do the job. But that doesn't prevent repeat injury. So you still need to be cautious. And pre game warm up should definitely help.

These internal ligaments don't cause any great disability as the ones of arm and legs, if they get injured. Also these heal much faster due to excellent blood supply as lack of weight bearing work.
