Question: I twisted my left leg in the shower and an intense sharp pain shot into my hip. I was taken for X-rays showing no break or fracture. I still have discomfort, but am taking prescribed meds, my entire leg is affected and I have burning sensations ESP in the lower leg area. My leg feels beat up and heavy. I waiting to try to get into a specialist but insurance is slowing this down (out of state) besides icing and meds I am playing a waiting game. What might I have done to create the intense unyielding paini experienced?69 year old female

Detailed Answer:
Hello & thank you for submitting your question to HCM.

Burning and a "heavy" sensation are suspicious for neurologic causes. It is possible the twisting injury might have caused irritation or inflammation affecting the nerve.

If you actually fell on your leg, this might also cause swelling and the same resulting symptoms to a nerve. Other Considerations include formation of a blood clot in the leg or vascular insufficiency, though this is probably less likely.

I assume you were prescribed something for pain , possibly an anti-inflammatory. If the symptoms do not resolve in a few days or if they get worse, or if you develop any new symptoms, please see a physician immediately.

As you're currently waiting to see a specialist, you might have to return to the emergency department for evaluation and possibly imaging of the leg (such as ultrasound, CT or MRI).

I hope this was helpful & you're going to feel better soon.

Sincerely,
Dr Galamaga
