What Causes Pain And Swelling In Jaws When Diagnosed With Mumps?

default
Posted on Wed, 16 Mar 2016
Question: Hi. Yesterday morning I woke up with pain and swelling in my jaws below the ear. I thought it may be due to the ice cream I had the previous night. It prolonged during the day. Today I went to the doctor. He diagnosed it to be mumps. I do have the symptoms for mumps but the swelling is not that bad as I had heard in other cases. Can this be something else?

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome to health care magic,

I have read your query and understand the concern.

It might be an infection of Parotid gland (mumps) or lymph node enlargement but it will be very difficult to comment exactly without clinical examination of the swelling.

So,it would be helpful for me if you can take the picture of the swelling and send it to me.I will go through it and will guide you accordingly.

Also, let me know if you have symptoms of fever, headache, tiredness or any other.

Kindly get back to me with more information.

I don't know if the picture is enough to understand. As the swelling is not very pronounced but under the ear. I do have the symptoms of fever, headache and tiredness but it is not continuous. Also when I cough a little my head feels heavy. And there is discomfort in my ears.

Brief Answer:
Chances of mumps is there.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for more information and pictures.

I have gone through your query and both pictures.

From the clinical features and pictures,I may agree with your doctor's opinion regarding mumps (swelling of Parotid gland) and I would keep mumps as the first and likely possibility in your case.

However,it is quite uncommon to have mumps in this age group since the disease is more common in children.

But you should continue with your doctors advice who may prescribe you oral antibiotics course (Augmentin duo preferably) with other symptomatic medication for fever, headache and cough.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Dr.Sandip Kabra
