What Causes Pain And Swelling In The Hand?

Question: My 92 yr old mother has swollen hand with joint pain in middle fingers. Other hand ok. Limited use of affected hand . Visited GP who determined no broken bones, subscribed a salve but has not worked. Has taken OTC pain killer to allow sleep at night.

Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.
I have gone carefully through your query and understand your concerns. I would insist you to upload an image of the swollen hands / joints. It will help me to evaluate the possible causes. You may apply hot compress as it would provide relief. OTC pain medication may be continued as per requirement but should be preferably taken in full stomach.
I will await your response. Let me know if I could help further.
Regards

Brief Answer:
Pathophysiology explained.
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. One does not need to suffer from any type of injury to get carpal tunnel syndrome. It is a small narrow anatomical space through which the median nerve passes. If due to edema or some other reason the space decreases, the nerve gets entrapped and impinged upon and one gets carpal tunnel syndrome.
It directly does not have anything to do with stress.
