What Causes Pain Around C-section Incision 6 Months Postpartem?

default
Posted on Fri, 27 Nov 2015
Question: Is it normal for my csection scar to hurt 6 months post partem. The pain is a dull ache that when i press near it that radiates to my groin.

I had an ultrasound of my ovaries and uterus with nothing found (end of Sept). Also had a CT 2 months ago and nothing found, although im not sure if a CT is best for that area.

I had a csection in the same spot 3.5 years ago too. I have struggled with pain in this area ever since.

My OB/GYN doesnt act concerned but not sure if i need another opionion.

need more information

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome to healthcare magic.I have gone through your query.
Iam Dr.Srilatha gynaecologist.
I understand your concern. In my opinion the dull ache might be a muscular pain.
I would like to know following things for better suggestions:-
1)Do you have any fever?
2)Any evidence of swelling over the scar area?
3)Any bowel or urinary problems?
4)Any history of strenuous works following delivery within 3-5 months?
Kindly provide me the information. Also upload the ultrasound report.
Looking forward to hear from you.

Thanks for the follow up.

1. No fever
2. There are a series of knots on both sides which is scar tissue, correct? The area to right of actual scar is what hurts but know that the area impacted is greater than the width of the scar. The pain is internal and doesnt appear to be swollen. Other than the knots, i dont feel anything odd or swollen.
3 no bowel or urinary problems to note.
4. I have a 30 ound daughter that I pick up all the time. I also carry around a baby in a car seat daily. Other than that, nothing too strenuous.

The CT scan I had a week ago did include pelvis. They were focused on an investigation of liver and spleen but assume they would have noted anything found in pelvic area.

I dont have the ultrasound results but was told that there was nothing, including the cyst found at the CT in early Sept. It was also gone .

Brief Answer:
Pain might be muscular origin

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, thanks for providing all the necessary information.
Your history is very clear.
My first suspicion is infection which is ruled out as you dont have any sign of fever. So the chance of infection is very very less.
The second differential diagnosis is abdominal hernia or scar hernia. This is also ruled out as the CT and ultrasound reports are normal.
Bowel and urinary tract abnormalities also ruled out as you dont have any associated symptoms.
So I am left out with only one possibility like a simple muscular pain and as the scar was
healed well and there were no post op complications the pain might not be related to scar.
So the most probable condition to my best knowledge the pain might be muscular origin.
Muscle relaxants with pain killer might help.
It might not be serious nothing to worry.
Hope this satisfies your query.
Feel free to discuss furthur.
Best regards...Dr.Srilatha

Thanks for the thorough explanation. Any chance it could be due to adhesions? I hear it's common with c sections and i have had two.

The issue started when I had a miscarriage two years ago and it required 2 D&C's. After the second one, the pain started and has never really gone away. The birth of my second child 5.5 months ago seems to have started the pain up strong again.

Muscle pain also makes sense as i woke up last night with what appeared to be the stretching or pulling of a muscle in that area. I must have moved my leg or body in an odd way when asleep because it created what was a sharp muscle stretch pain. It went away pretty quickly.

Thanks and, before closing inquiry out, just any final thoughts on it being an adhesion(s)

Brief Answer:
Adhesions will be mostly asymptomatic

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear,I have gone through your query.I understand your concern.
In my opinion there will be formation of adhesions after surgery. But the adhesions
will be mostly asymptomatic.
The repeated D&C might cause intrauterine adhesions. But it presents with scanty menstruation. As you dont have any any menstrual symptoms it might not be the possibility.
So the adhesions might not be the cause of pain.
After considering all the possibilities dull ache appears to be muscular pain.
Hope this satisfies your query.
Feel free to discuss furthur.
Best regards...Dr.Srilatha
