What Causes Pain Following The Placement Of Dental Implants?
Question: my father and I had 4 on 4 dental implant surgery. My pain of an 8 out of 10 scale lasted about 4 days, I was able to handle it with prescribed norco. We also both took antibiotics and ibuprofen as prescribed for swelling. However his #8 pain has not gone away and can not be managed. After several upgrades in pain med re-scripts he is now taking 7.5-300 Vicodin and still is unable to manage the pain., his surgery was last Tuesday, so it has been 8-9 days with this pain. He has gone to a second dentist for another opinion and to get the new Vicodin today, but the pain Is still too intense. The gums appear to be healing fine according to both, but the pain continues to be severe and traumatic, he says in the front middle bottom is the worst.. I am afraid he is ingesting too many pain meds and he is getting 4 hours of sleep only after pure exhaustion. any recommendations on insight on next steps, where else could this pain be coming from or where we can go next.. the pain is unbearable

As far as The pain following the placement of implants is concerned, it is common to have mild to moderate pain, but the type of pain you are describing is not common. The most common cause can be because of the inflammation following placement of the implants and because of the pull from the sutures but this should get resolved in a week time. The other possible cause can any injury to the nerve while placing the implants (in case of lower arch) or secondary to infection in the imlanted site.
Nothing to be panic, consult your impnatologist and get it evaluated. if there is any infection at the site of implant placement then that are needs to be irrigated and curretted along with a course of antibiotics like amoxycillin and metronidazole combination(if you are not allergic). If it is secondary to nerve injury, it takes weeks to months to recover from the pain. You can take nnerve regenerating drugs like Vitamin B6 and B12.
Regarding the analgesics, you can avoid vicodin since it has many adverse effects on long term consumption, instead you can go for ibuprofen paracetamol combination. You can take it for another 5 days.
If the pain is not subsiding in 5days, then you need to take a radiograph to ruleout any infection or trauma to the nerve.
If possible upload the images of radiographs taken after the placement of implants so that i can give you exact diagnosis.
