What Causes Pain In Buttocks While Sitting In A 75 Year Old Man?
What can I do to prevent it?
Still waiting for reply
Might be coccydynia, needs further evaluation
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
Welcome.
I have gone through your query
Based on the information i feel it might be coccydynia, but need to be confirmed.
An X-ray and MRI of the area will help in identifying the exact cause of your problem and to rule out any joint displacement or fracture. Consulting an Orthopedician will be helpful. Treatment usually involves mild pain killers and hot fomentation to relieve the local inflammation. In case the symptoms are persistent then local steroid injections and surgery might be needed.
You can follow these lifestyle modifications for some relief:
Eat healthy nutritious balanced diet which should include fresh fruits and green leafy vegetables, this will avoid constipation and pain while passing stools.
Apply heat pads to the tailbone area for 15-20 minutes, 4 times a day.
Use a "doughnut" cushion or pillow to sit on.
Avoid sitting for long periods of time. When seated, sit on hard surfaces and alternate sitting on each side of the buttocks. Also, lean forward and direct your weight away from the tailbone.
This provisional advice provided by me is based entirely on the input provided to me. I would suggest examination by the doctor.
I hope this suggestion might be of some help to you. Please accept my answer in case you do not have further queries.
Take care.
I googled coccydynia to look at the meaning, but I do not have any pain near the tailbone, so I do not think this is the problem.
The pain is in the area of the muzzles/flesh that I sit on which makes contact with the chair. I think the padding of the buttock have reduce over time.
As I already mentioned, I am always sitting on a soft cushion to prevent pain.
If I sit on a hard surface it is immediately painfull.
Please give me your reply. XXXXXXX
reduction in fat around buttock due to age, muscle strain
Detailed Answer:
Hi. XXXXXXX
Thanks for coming back.
As you have mentioned, with age there is reduction in the fat quantity around the buttock, that may be responsible for your symptom. This is more pronounced if the person is thin.
Try a foam cushion, folded blankets, something soft to sit on. Also try to encourage her to stand periodically, or roll from side to side to alleviate constant pressure in one area. Avoid long term sitting and also observe for any pressure sores.
Other possibilities is muscle strain which also can present with similar symptom. You should take NSAID like aceclofenac with muscle relaxants like chlorzoxazone/ tizanidine twice daily for 3-5 days based on the responce. You can ask your local doctor for prescription of this agent. Along with this hot compression and analgesic gel or spray will be beneficial. This will help you.
