Question: My husband started having pain in his left ear which had lost hearing in years ago. The pain has been so bad it takes him to his knees and impairs his talking. He was taken to Urgent care, they drained the wax and fluid out but found no infection. He went home and felt a little better but then the pain started again after a few days. Urgent care doctor did tell him he should go get a cat scan at the hospital. He has not, he waited until I returned home after visiting family last week. So should I take him to the hospital or to a ear, nose and throat doctor first?
I am sorry, he does have high blood pressure to. I also found out he had not been taking his medicine all the time. He also had caught my cold before I left to go visit family for a week so I thought it was from infection but draining the was and fluid out of his ears showed no infection.
Brief Answer:
please take him to an ent doctor!
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Please do not worry , I am sure your husband will be fine soon!
There can be 2 possibilities for the pain your husband is having
The first one , which is more likely is that he has developed an infection of the middle ear following the cold and this is causing pain , you will have to meet your ear nose throat (ENT) doctor for confirming this and starting him on antibiotics
The second possibility , which is a bit serious is called malignant otitis externa , which is an infection of the ear canal and seen in elderly patients and causes severe pain , for this he will have to meet his ent doctor for examination and advice.
Please don't delay and take him to the doctor as soon as possible.
Meanwhile ask him to keep the ear dry and avoid using q tips.
Thanks
