What Causes Pain In Lower Back On Left Side?

default
Posted on Mon, 21 Jul 2014
Question: I am a 80 year old female. I was having sharp pain in the lower left side of my back and went to a walk in type clinic because my Dr. is on a two week vacation. The Dr. I saw did a urine test and said I had a bladder infection and put me on Nitrofurantoin mono-mcr 100. I have finished this med two days ago. Still having back pain. Also, I was recently put on Januvia 25ml for type 2 diabetes. Web Med comments said this could cause back pain. I stopped taking it a week ago. Perhaps the bladder infection has not cleared up?

Brief Answer:
Possibility of Urinary stone has to be ruled out.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for your query, based on the facts that you have posted it appears that you had pain in lower back on left side and Dr has prescribed Nitrofurantoin which you have already consumed for one week with no relief from pain.

The low back ache on Lt Side can be due to presence of stone either in Kidney or Ureter associated with UTI.

Please get your routine urine test and urine culture done to find out the organisms causing this infection and antibiotics to which they are sensitive to.

Please take broad spectrum antibiotics like Cefexine along with urinary antiseptic like Nitrofurantoin twice daily and urine alkaliser thrice daily.Later on switch on to appropriate antibiotics as per culture report.

The possibility of urinary stone has to be ruled out by doing Ultrasound Scanning of abdomen.

Ensure to drink more water. To keep your urine dilute .

Hope I have answered your query ,please feel free to ask if you have more questions ,
I shall be happy to help you
Thanks and Regards.
