What Causes Pain In Ribs On Left Side After An Injury?

default
Posted on Tue, 10 Jun 2014
Question: I tripped getting out of the bath tub several weeks ago. I had some aching pain in my ribs on the left side but nothing too harsh. Subsequently I have developed other pain. Severe pain in the neck on the left side on Sunday morning, that has subsided but on Monday morning woke with aching ribs on the left side, very sore, tight and aching left breast extending to my under arm and down my left side as well as a sharp pain under the left shoulder blade as I move in certain positions or at night when I turn over.
I am wondering if this is related to perhaps bruising a rib when I fell or is it more indicative of heart related issues?

Brief Answer:
Costochondritis may be the cause; ECG required

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing your query
After going through your suffering, the pain could be of costochondritis (painful when ribs are pressed), may be relieved by following measure along with the drugs like ibuprofen and muscle relaxant like thiocolchicoside,metaxolone-
1. Avoiding unnecessary exercise or activities that make the symptoms worse; avoid contact sports until there is improvement in symptoms, and then return to normal activities only as tolerated.
2. Rib belt along with hot water fomentation helps.
It is usually a self limiting disease and is more common in women.
As far as your concern that it might be because of heart problem, this may easily be ruled out by ECG. The chest pain of heart origin is usually associated with stress or on doing physical work, sweating, and breathlessness.

If the problem persists you may see a doctor to rule out the other possibilities.
Hope this information suffices and I shall be glad to answer any further query.
Take care and wish you good health
