What Causes Pain In Shoulders On Lifting Weights?

default
Posted on Fri, 4 Sep 2015
Question: I used to work-out in Gym in the past however there has been a long gap (about 4 years). Recently I have resumed my work-out (been 5 months) and experiencing ache in my shoulders (where muscles are attached to the collar bone at the shoulder end). The pain increases when I lift heavy weights, specially while working out on Chest/Shoulders. After workout a little pain remains through the day. Have not seen any doctor yet, however been checking with Gym instructors, but didn't receive a satisfactory response (have no trust if they can suggest something). Do you have any suggestions/solutions? How to recover from this?

Brief Answer:
Muscle spasm likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The ache in the shoulders specially on lifting weights is likely to be due to muscle spasms and cramps due to a gap in your regular exercise schedule. You need to avoid doing too much first. Avoid lifting weights for a week. You can do a hot compress in the painful area. Applying a local analgesic gel will also help.
Do increase your fluid intake and avoid using a pillow for few days. You can consult your physician and get mild pain killers and muscle relaxants prescribed in case the pain is persistent.
I hope this answers your query.
In case you have additional questions or doubts, you can forward them to me, and I shall be glad to help you out.

I have already raised my fluid intake from last 4 month, I drink around 4.5 to 5 Ltr of water everyday. For next couple of week I will stop lifting heavy weights and avoid using pillow. Can you suggest any analgesic gel to apply? Also any doc if I need after couple of week?

Brief Answer:
You may need oral muscle relaxants.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
You can apply Volini gel after a hot compress in the painful area. You can consult an orthopedician nearest to your place in case the pain is persistent. You can get appropriate muscle relaxants prescribed from him.
Hope my answer is helpful.
