What Causes Pain In The Hip Radiating Down The Leg?
Question: I've been told I need a hip replacement. Can a bad hip cause pain all the way down the leg to the shin?
Brief Answer:
Yes,it does as following
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
I understand your concern.
If your doctor said you need a hip replacement, this means that your hip joint is having problems that are only resolved with surgery (hip replacement).
The joint is a ball-and-rocket synovial joint. By aging, especially in multiparum women, this anatomical structure of the joint will get damaged. The damaged joint will put pressure on the nearby nerves, causing pain as in your case.
This pain is temporary relieved by using analgesic orally and locally. The final solution is hip replacement.
Please follow your orthopedist advice.

The reason I'm asking is that I also have back issues - stenosis, herniated discs, overlapping discs. I started having leg problems 10 years ago when overnight my right leg practically went to jelly and I experienced the same ferocious pain in the quad, knee and down into the shin that I'm experiencing now in the left leg. There was some permanent muscle wasting in the right leg. It was a slow, years-long recovery, but that leg has since regained some of its strength and I rarely have any pain in it.
What I'm saying is this seems like XXXXXXX vu. The only difference is that the left leg still supports my weight. Over the years since the right leg "blew up" on me, I've become increasingly clumsy and had multiple falls. Now it feels like I'm losing much of my lower body strength, one side at a time.
I am a widow with a farm and lots of heavy lifting to do each day. As a result of that and the slow, steady lessening of lower body strength, my upper body strength is great - probably superior to that of many women my age. I would like to be able to continue this lifestyle. But this steady erosion or body strength is a concern, one that I doubt a hip replacement will remedy.
Thank you for any advice you can give! XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Please be more confident to restore bottom strength
Detailed Answer:
Hi back my dear,
I am so sorry for the late reply due to my XXXXXXX clinical overload this weekend.
I am also sorry for the loss you had. I am astonished by your determination and strength you have to continue your life and farm works alone at your age.
As mentioned earlier, it is common for women to have hip problems at point of requiring replacement. This would resolve your actual health issues in order to carry your farm duties in time and more easily.
As you are also having other health issues related to spinal cord, indeed they would aggravate the pain you feel.
However, there is a temporary solution of reducing the pain with pain killers.
Orthopedist and neurologist will decide the best treatment strategy for you. Please follow their advice rigorously.
Wish fast recovery.
