What Causes Pain In The Left Side Of The Abdomen?

default
Posted on Fri, 8 Sep 2017
Question: Hey doctor,

I have been having this pain on the left side of my abdomen, I have attached a picture where but the pain seems to radiate around that area and feels like a dull ache kind if like when you're pants are too tight. I've had this for a couple weeks now but it seems to happen mainly after I eat especially fatty foods, and it just feels like these foods are sitting in my stomach sometimes all day and I seem to burp a lot after eating and sometimes feel the food in my throat. Why could this be? I have had acid reflux problems in the past but the acid supressors never really worked and seemed to make matters worse for me and I had an upper gastropocy where the camera goes down the throat and it came up completely clear and I bad been on PPI for about 4 weeks prior. Could I maybe be lacking acid or digestive juices in my stomach for when I eat fatty foods? Is there anything I can possibly try natural or otherwise and what could the pain in the left side of my abdomen be? Thanks in advance.

Kind Regards,
XXXX

Brief Answer:
Avoid fatty and oily foods.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted the history and understood your concerns well.
Pain in the left side of abdomen increasing with fatty foods and GERD in spite of a PPI and Normal Endoscopy indicate the following:
There is intolerance to the fatty foods that your intestines can not cope with causing all the symptoms you have mentioned.
Since prevention is better than cure, you may please reduce or stop the intake of oily, fatty foods as well as milk and milk products and see the results.
If this fails to give you the results go for the following:
Tests of stool for three consecutive days.
Ultrasonography of the whole abdomen.
Colonoscopy as required. These will help further to pin-point the causative factors and help for further management.
Addition of Antacids and Domperidone and Pancreatic enzymes with food may help, although these medications need a valid prescription for the strength and dosages of a Doctor.

I hope this answer helps you, please feel free to ask for further relevant queries if you feel that there is a gap of communication.

Brief Answer:
Stop the things that do not suit you.

Detailed Answer:
It is good that you are taking probiotics.
You may continue for a few weeks and stop, let the intestinal system have its normal flora.
Simple principle about what to eat and not to eat is:
Identify and make a list of the foods, beverages that instigate or enhance your problems and stop them altogether.
This is very subjective as one thing that suits one may not be suitable for another, Hence observe and stop all such things and continue with the things that suit you the most.

Thanks for that doctor will do, one thing could my pancreas possibly be the cause of it or is that on the right side? The pain is in the upper left side of my abdomen as I menitoned before. The pain is mild and isnt severe but it just seems to be there all day and I have noticed it is worse at night or if I am doing work and running around its not enough to warrant a hostipal visit but it is still uncomfortable is this something that can occur in a 19 year old?

Brief Answer:
Radiology is important

Detailed Answer:
Pancreas problems in a 19 year old is very very rare and has severe symptoms.
And it is the Ultrasonography/CT scan abdomen or MRCP that can diagnose pancreas related problems. Blood tests only help a bit. Stool test also helps a bit.
