What Causes Pain In The Navel Area Of A Child?

default
Posted on Wed, 11 Mar 2015
Question: My son is 6 and he has had pain by his belly button for one week. I took him to the doctor and they checked him for strep but that was negative. The pain does not radiate. If you palpate over the belly button he says that it hurts. The pain is intermittent. It will wake him up if he is sleeping and it is pretty painful when it is acute. He has no fever, no diarrhea, no constipation no other symptoms. I have given him some tums but not sure that it is helping. Can you provide me with any input?

Brief Answer:
Appendicitis

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for the query

Pain around the belly button can be two things. 1. colitis that is infection of the colon or 2. appendicitis that is infection of the appendix

Here is how you should go about it

1. Since the pain is present for sometime now I recommend that you get a ultrasound abdomen done to rule out appendicitis
2. I would want to treat with antibiotics like tab ciprofloxacin with tinidazole for 5 days
3. avoid milk and milk products until he is better
5. watch out for severe cramps
6. Tylenol is a good drug for pain, it can be taken three times a day

I hope I was of help, if you have any further queries please get back to me

Regards
