Posted on Mon, 20 Nov 2017
Question: I ate food outside my office premises, and found streets cows also drink same water from which my food is made. Is there any chance of bacterial infection. From last 2 days I am experiencing pain in my sternum followed by pain in my lower right ribcage + at times shortness of breath. The cows seems to be weak and diseased + rickety in looks.
Can I try Ciprofloxacin 500 mg to avoid any infection ...

Brief Answer:
Gastritis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

While the above mentioned scenario has the potential to acquire serious infections it may not be sure that the above set of symptoms may be related to.
It looks like gastritis. You may try simple zinetac 150 mg twice a day before meal.
Ciprofloxacin can be taken after a infection is proven. it is a good antibiotic which can help against serious bacteria infection. Without which can prove to get resistance as well.
The cow condition can be potentially be misleading to take unnecessary medication.
I suggest to avoid eating at such food joints.

Thanks for the answer.

As the conditions of cows were really poor ....as I mentioned above is there any fear of anthrax or zoonotic diseases like leptospirosis or anthrax.
Although in West Bengal, Rajarhat , Newtown I heard a news past 2 months before
many buffaloes died near my office area.
I work in a MNC company but the place where it is situated is full of such scenarios.
Can u please comment me anything on this ?.

Brief Answer:
Blood counts and urine counts

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

To gather evidence about health I suggest to get urine microscopy and blood counts. If there is any disease it would be seen on the blood tests.
While there is potential to acquire such infections with such unhealthy practices there is no need to panic at the moment.
Hence I suggest to refrain from such practices and do not eat outside home.
