What Causes Pain In The Upper Jaw?
Question: I have mild annoying pain in my upper right jaw when I open my mouth wide. There is a crunching sound as well in my upper right jaw when I open my mouth widely. I have had this for several months and it has not gotten worse, but continues to concern me.
Brief Answer:
TMJ arthritis
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
You seem to have a mild chronic arthritis of temporo mandibular joint. YOu should get an Xray of the joint to confirm this. A oral surgeon would be the right person to contact.
Having soft food would defintely help.
Do not open the mouth wide esp during yawing, so a conscious effort not to open wide.
A dental examination is also useful at this time to know the reasons of arthritis.
Hope my perspective helps.

Thank you Dr. Parinam. I had a dental exam a few weeks ago, and he palpated my neck but did not feel anything remarkable. My dental x-rays are normal as well.
What is the cause of the "crunchy" sound that my right jaw makes when I open it wide ?
With appreciation,
V

Brief Answer:
Other possibility is eustachian tube opening
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Please do not catch me wrong but I still feel the number cause for the sound is TMJ disorder. Normal dental Xrays would not show abnormality of the joint. It has to be specific to for TMJ or CT scan.
The other possibility of the sound could be cracking sound because of opening and closing of the high pressure eustachian tube in the ears. IN such a case an ENT examination would help.
