What Causes Pain In Upper Left Abdomen Just Below Rib Cage?
Question: Pain upper left abdomen, just below rib cage, about 2 1/2/inches from center of breastbone
Brief Answer:
Rule out pain due to cardiac origin first
Detailed Answer:
Hi dear. Thanks for giving me an opportunity to answer your query.
I would do an ECG first to rule out pain due to cardiac origin. This is important because few presentations are atypical.
Could you share me some information to assess if the pain is non-cardiac?
How long does the pain stay?Frequency?Nature-is it spasmodic?
Do you have increased bowel movement or stool output?
Is it associated with fever, tiredness, sweating, chestpain, dizziness?
Awaiting for your reply.

After about 10 days of pain, it stopped yesterday early evening. No pain today. Do not believe cardiac origin. Was not associated with fever, tiredness, sweating, chestpain, dizziness. No change in bowel movements.
From what I have read, pain could be from gas trapped in upper colon, that finally passed through. What is your opinion of this possibility?

Brief Answer:
Trapping of gas is unlikely
Detailed Answer:
Hi sir. Thanks for writing me back.
Since you have I acknowledged that your bowels are normal I presume you donot have constipation.
I regret to say that this could be unlikely. The bowels move constantly (even in sleep) and hence gas cannot get trapped normally. In the absence of above symptoms I were to do an ultrasound abdomen and barium enema if required further to evaluate the cause of pain.
But yes, probably pathology of large intestine can be the cause of this pain.
Hope this answers your query.
