What Causes Pain In Upper Left Quadrant Of The Body?

default
Posted on Fri, 17 Oct 2014
Question: Hi please help I am desperate. I have a pain in my upper left quadrant, inside my ribcage to the lef side. It started after I had lots of fatty foods for about 4/5 weeks. Since the pain started 8 months ago I had a CT scan, X-rays, sonar, colonoscopy and gastroscopy done, everything is clear. All my blood tests are normal expect my PSA score which is 3.7. After a dose of antibiotics this came down to 1.7. The pains feels like something is pressing against my stomach, sometimes it’s burning and sometimes it feels like I ate a nail. I have literally no other symptoms. The pain stopped for about a month and a half, and after eating butter twice it started again. Please what is wrong with me? The pain is such that I can “fall asleep with it”, but lately I must drink pain killers.

Brief Answer:
Could be intolerance to specific food or Gastritis

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX. It must be stressful to feel such pain even without getting to know what the diagnosis is after going through so many investigations. I feel you could be having Gastritis to fatty foods or some reaction like lactose intolerance though this is not typical of lactose intolerance. I suggest you try some medicines for Gastritis. I usually advice Capsule Omeprazole or Pantoprazole to my patients twice a day empty stomach. This might give relief but should be continued for at least a month. You can try and avoid the offending foods that you must be aware of. Do let me know if we can answer any more of your queries. Take care. Dr Rishi, New XXXXXXX XXXXXXX

Hi doctor, thank you for the answer. Could gastritis pain be chronic? I will see what the South XXXXXXX equivalent for those meds are, but I sense I may need a prescription.

Brief Answer:
See your Doctor for a prescription

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX. You are welcome. Gastritis can be chronic and prolonged. These medicines should help you as they decrease the acid secretion from the stomach significantly. You should have them half an hour before you eat or drink anything. Please check the equivalent in South XXXXXXX and see your Doctor who would be able to help you with a prescription for the medicines. Do let me know if they help or otherwise. Would like to help you through this. Take care. If there are no more queries please help us by rating this answer.

If your advise works you will get full rating! Just strange that I have no other symptoms? And that it was not picked up by the gastroscopy .Anyway, worth a try.

Brief Answer:
Lets try the treatment and hope it works.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXX, since most other conditions have been ruled out this is the likely suspect. Gastroscopy might not pick up early Gastritis and not all Gastritis cause macroscopic changes to be seen through the scope. Other symptoms of Gastritis would be nausea or vomiting which comes later. Some people feel symptoms of reflux but that is more common in cases of GERD - GastroEsophageal Reflux Disease, which you do not have. So, give these medicines a try and hope for the best. If it does not relieve the symptoms then we can proceed from there. Take care. Dr Rishi, XXXXXXX
