What Causes Pain In Upper Right Quadrant After Gallbladder Removal?

default
Posted on Mon, 20 Apr 2015
Question: I had my gallbladder removed in 2012.
I take a multivitamin (Centrum) daily.
Recently about 15/20 minutes of taking the vitamins I have pains in my upper right quadrant. It is almost like I can fill the vitamins being digestived it's painful. Eventually, the pain goes away.
Is there another vitamin I should try? Why does this happen and is this normal?

Brief Answer:
Stone in bile ducts can be the reason.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

First of all few words about multivitamines supplementation. Please note that vitamins absorption is a very complicated process which needs many factors to work property. Centrum multivitamin or any other supplement has very low vitamin absorption. It is only about 10-20% that gets into your bloodstream. The rest is simply removed with stool.
So taking multivitamins is rather pointless. Vitamins present in vegetables are much more valuable than those in tablets.

Your pain can be caused by stones in bile ducts. It can be very similar to gallstones pain.
Pain in this location which appears after a meal can (it can appear after specific foods like vitamins) be also caused by peptic ulcer.

I suggest you to have abdominal ultrasound and liver tests done at first. If nothing will be found, gastroscopy should be done.
Please also replace Centrum with vegetables. It will be much better for you.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.

Thank you. I have had my Ast and Alt. They were both normal. I had my gallbladder removed because it was not working properly. It seems to be always after vitamins.

Brief Answer:
Bile ducts issue is still possible.

Detailed Answer:
GGTP and AP (alkaline phosphatase) are tests which can tell about possible stone in bile ducts. It can be always after vitamins. This can be a kind of reaction to specific medicine. But mentioned above possibilities should be considered.
