What Causes Pain On Right Side Of Rib Cage?

default
Posted on Tue, 17 Feb 2015
Question: I have a pain on my right side right under my rib that keeps getting worse. Been hurting for 2 weeks. I have no gallbladder, already had the old kind of surgery with the long scar. Just wondering if it is my liver. Also had my right breast removed. Or....scar tissue.

I have no fever that I can tell. I have had a ct scan last year and it showed kidney stones. I passed quite a large one 6mm. Some constipation. There is no tenderness that I can tell. It just deep in there. Pain seems more when I take a breath. There are no stomach issues except for indigestion.

Brief Answer:
Doesnt seem to be scar, can be stomach or liver.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for writing back,

Your answers were really helpful.

My Opinion:

Your problem does not seem to be related to scar, as you would have indicated some visible redness or issues with scar like any discharge, edema swelling , unusual warmth fever etc.

Second cause i was considering was liver abcess but as you told you don't have fever and liver abcess usually presents with fever so it seems to be very less likely that it can be liver abcess.

In your case as it seems,

It can be three close probabilities.

1- It can be your liver:

I can not comment on liver with such little access to your reports and absence of an exam but yes there is a possibility that it can be your live.

It might just be a benign pain but liver is a possible cause.
What you have to do for it, that i will suggest you in the end so that you don't miss anythin.

2- Costochondritis:

It is inflamation if lover ribs which can present with severe tenderness and pain.

3. Indigestion:

It can be a cause of pain but it is remotely possible as idigestion pain is fluctuant and may get relieved time to time, it is less likely but i mentioned it to cover all possibilities.

Suggestions:

1- Take tablet Tylenol 500 mg twice daily.

2- Meet your doctor and discuss about liver being a cause, your doctor might wanna examine you by pressing your abdomen for liver enlargement, along with checkup of scar and blood work for liver and ultrsoung liver.

This will rule out or rule in more serious cause.

3- Keep calm and see the effect of medicine.

4- For indigestion i suggest my patients omeprazole 40mg before breakfast and plasil with enzymes twice a day, it really helps them.

5- Dont drink fizzy and caffeinated drinks.

6- Warm compresses at pain area help.

7- Dont take any liver damaging pain killer until liver is ruled out.

Keep calm things will hopefuly improve with time.

I hope this answers your question.

If you have more questions i am happy to help.

Wish you the best of health :)

Dr.Muhammad Ahmad.
