What Causes Pain On Right Side Of Stomach?
Question: hello, I have a pain in my right side of my stomach, not don towards the appendix because my mum recently had her taken out so I'm sort of sure about the area, the pain is sometimes severe and is only relieved with laying flat or sat down and taking some shallow breaths as it hurts to take a deep breath - it feels like trapped wind but the pain is always there just in lesser degrees. I've taken some zantac for 2 days now hoping for some release as I do have problems with stomach acid. Can you help? I'm also constipated and hurts when burping.
Brief Answer:
Exclude gallblader&stomach problems...
Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you for asking HCM!
You are reporting right side stomach pain that is indicative for:
- gallblader problems
- stomach ulcer/ gastritis
- bowel problems associated with constipation.
If you were my patient I would suggest to do the following examinations:
- Abdominal ultrasound to rule out gallblader problems.
- Upper endoscopy to rule out gastritis and other stomach problems.
- Blood work
For the moment I recommend:
- continue zantac twice a day
- drink plenty of water
- use lactulose to soften your stool
- use anti spastics in case of abdominal cramos.
Hope this was of help!

Brief Answer:
You can continue eating normally,but...
Detailed Answer:
Hi back,
Of course, you can continue eating normally. But, you should follow some rules when it comes to choosing the food/drink and the way of preparing them. So, you should :
- avoid oily, fried foods
- eat more fruits, vegetables,,
- increase water intake (e.g. pure water, soups, etc.) instead of fried or fast-foods
- eat often, small portions, and chew up slowly
You should continue taking ranitidine until you undergo some investigations and a final diagnosis is made.
With regards to lactulose, you can stop taking it when your feces will have normal consistency.
Both, ranitidine and lactulose are symptomatic medications. You should undergo the above-mentioned tests to determine the right diagnosis, in order to take proper specific treatment.
Hope it helped!

Many thanks Doc.
I didn't take the lactulose solution though I did purchase it. After drinking the water alone this morning it was sufficient to resume my bowel movement.
I'm drinking water now, the main discomfort comes from when I'm taking a deep breath, stretching and burping.
I am still taking the ranitidine, if nothing clears up by Monday, I will definitely go and see the doctor or head straight to the A&E.
